ITECH IT-M7700 series of AC power supplies

Brief description of the series

The ITECH IT-M7700 series is designed to replace the similar ITECH IT7300 series, which has been in production since 2015 and has proven itself as an excellent AC power sources with total power up to 3 kVA. The new IT-M7700 series retains all the strengths of the previous one, plus adds a number of improvements and innovations, including: a large set of typical waveforms for a variety of tests, the ability to add a constant component to the output voltage (AC + DC mode), synchronous operation of three sources for the formation of a three-phase voltage, a significant reduction in weight and dimensions.

The IT-M7700 series includes 10 single-phase models with maximum output power from 300 VA to 3 000 VA and programmable output frequency from 45 Hz to 1 000 Hz. All models contain a built-in arbitrary waveform generator, which allows you to generate both pure sinusoidal signals and all types of distortion, including harmonics, spikes, dips, complex noise, etc. Also, all models contain a built-in multimeter capable of measuring twelve main parameters of the output signal. For detailed differences between the series models, see the interactive table. A complete description of all the characteristics, as well as the control software and driver for LabVIEW can be downloaded below on this page in the Documentation section.

Series model differences

Most of the functions of the IT-M7700 series are supported by all models, however, the capabilities of some models differ from the basic ones.

Models whose name ends with L are the simplest in the series. They lack the function of modeling and analyzing harmonics. They also do not have a built-in waveform database, including 30 harmonic distortion waveforms.

Models IT-M7723 and IT-M7724 cannot be connected in series to increase the output voltage and cannot be combined to form a three-phase network. But they have two voltage ranges and two current ranges, which increases their capabilities.

Models with names ending in D have a peak to RMS current ratio of 6, while all other models have a ratio of 3. This feature makes the IT-M7722D and IT-M7723D sources better suited for testing devices with high inrush currents.

Video review of the series

This video overview shows the main features of the ITECH IT-M7700 series of AC voltage and current sources. After watching this video, you can get acquainted with the different features of this series, the main technical characteristics and design features.

Built-in generic waveforms

The output voltage of any model of the ITECH IT-M7700 series is formed using an internal arbitrary waveform generator. This makes it possible to carry out all sorts of tests, such as simulating various modes of operation of the AC power network.

In addition to the sine wave, 30 commonly used output voltage shapes can be selected from the menu of all instruments (except L models), including: square wave, triangle, sawtooth, various types of sine wave distortion, voltage spikes, dips and more. This figure shows some of the typical voltage waveforms that the IT-M7700 series can generate.

Among the dozens of waveforms built into the IT-M7700, it is worth noting the simulation of power surges and dips. These types of test actions are often used to check the performance of power supplies and other similar devices. Oscillograms of real output voltages of IT-M7700 sources when simulating surges and dips are shown in the two screenshots below.

Arbitrary waveform generation

As mentioned above, all IT-M7700 series sources contain a built-in arbitrary waveform generator, which allows you to generate both pure sinusoidal signals and all kinds of distortions, including harmonics, complex noise, etc. In addition, it is possible to add a constant component to the output voltage (AC + DC mode).

This screenshot shows an oscillogram of the generated voltage when changing from a pure sine wave to a square wave. Such a sharp change in the waveform occurs, for example, when switching the power supply of the device from an AC power network to an uninterruptible power supply.

Another useful feature of the IT-M7700 sources is the ability to set the initial and final phase of the generated sinusoidal signal within the range from 0 to 360 degrees. This is necessary in many types of tests, such as measuring the starting currents of electric motors and other devices.

Creating complex waveforms

To make the task of generating complex waveforms as easy as possible, the IT-M7700 sources support a list mode (LIST). In this mode, the source changes the voltage at its output in accordance with the list of user-defined states (up to fifty steps in total).

Each step can contain any of the built-in waveforms or a user-defined waveform. The step can be repeated as many times as needed. In addition, for each step, you can individually set the rise time, fall time, total execution time, and other parameters. This mode allows you to generate almost any waveform.

For example, this photo shows how the output voltage of the IT-M7700 series source changed when working out a list of five steps. Please note that during the first, third and fifth steps, the voltage amplitude gradually increased and gradually decreased (both of these parameters can be adjusted).

Video review of the main operating modes

This video review shows two modes of operation of the ITECH IT-M7700 compact AC voltage and current sources: the operation mode under the control of a computer program and the manual control mode. After watching this video, you will be much better versed in the possibilities of the sources of this series, the possibilities of the control program and the convenience of the user interface.

AC sources control software

The included free PC software provides powerful monitoring and control functions for ITECH IT-M7700 series laboratory AC power supplies. With it, you can conduct fully automatic tests by executing sequences of commands. Documentation is also very convenient, saving the measurement results of the built-in multimeter and screenshots of tests.

This software is shown in the screenshot below. In this case, the IT-M7722 model (up to 600 VA) is connected to the computer, and using the program, a list of output voltage changes has been compiled, consisting of three steps: first 55 V, 60 Hz, then 55 V, 50 Hz and then 60 V, 50 Hz. Note that for each step it is possible to add a DC voltage component (column VDC in the table).

Connecting to a computer

To connect IT-M7700 series sources to a computer, a replaceable communication module with the required interface must be installed in a special slot on their rear panel. In total there are five different modules with such interfaces: USB, Ethernet (LAN), GPIB (IEEE-488.2), RS-232, RS-485 and CAN. We recommend ordering the IT-E1206 module as the most versatile one. The appearance of the modules is shown in this photo.

If you plan to connect two sources in series to increase the output voltage, then one IT-E251 communication cable is required. If three sources are planned to work together to form a three-phase network, then two IT-E251 cables are required. Modules and cable are located below on this page in the Accessories section. The control program and driver for LabVIEW can be downloaded further on this page in the Documentation section.

As an example, this photo shows the rear panel of the IT-M7722 (up to 600 VA) AC power source with the IT-E1205 communication module installed (the blue connector in the center is the GPIB interface, aka IEEE-488.2).

Case design

The IT-M7700 series contains 10 models with output power from 300 VA to 3 000 VA, respectively, the weight and overall dimensions of different models of the series are different. The 300 VA and 600 VA sources are made in a 5 kg desktop case, but they can also be rack-mounted, taking up only half the rack in width and 1U in height. Sources for 750 VA and more powerful are made in a larger case (for exact dimensions, see the pages of the corresponding models).

The design of the case of desktop models allows you to install several sources one above the other, while the legs of the upper source are securely placed in special recesses in the lower case, which prevents the devices from slipping. The photo below shows this design feature of the ITECH IT-M7700 series.
