SHORT DESCRIPTION

Data Network Analyzer Series EXFO MAX-800 was released in 2016. This series is positioned as a low-cost solution for basic testing in Ethernet, OTN, SDH/PDH networks with speeds up to 10.7 Gbps. The series consists of three models: EXFO MAX-860, MAX-860G and MAX-880, which differ in maximum speed (1G or 10G), as well as supported protocols (Ethernet only or Ethernet + OTN + SDH/PDH).

The analyzers of this series are ergonomically designed and equipped with a large, high-quality touch screen with a diagonal of 20.3 cm and a resolution of 1280 x 800. The large screen of the device makes it easy to configure tests and view measurement results. And with a fast processor and optimized embedded Windows Embedded 8 operating system, you can run tests and analyze results faster.

The EXFO MAX-800 analyzers are equipped with the latest computer interfaces: USB 3.0 and Gigabit Ethernet, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also available as an inexpensive option. You can download a full description of all the characteristics below on this page in the section Documentation.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Data network analyzers EXFO MAX-800 features excellent functionality and a well-thought-out, intuitive user interface. The configuration of all tests, their execution and analysis of the results are presented in the form of detailed and visual graphic elements. In such devices, the ergonomics of the user interface is very important for the efficient work of a specialist, since the volume of analyzed data is very large.

The figure below shows the main menu of the EXFO MAX-880. As you can see, all tests for Ethernet are collected on one screen (Y.1564/EtherSAM, RFC 2544, BERT, traffic generation and monitoring, etc.), as well as for transport networks OTN, SDH, PDH and others. After selecting any of these tests, the corresponding window will open on the device screen, in which all the main parameters of the test will already be configured and you can immediately start it. Of course, if necessary, you can change any of the standard test parameters.

ITU-T Y.1564 (EtherSAM) Standard - An Efficient Approach to Ethernet Testing

RFC 2544 has long been used as the primary means of testing Ethernet networks. However, RFC 2544 was originally created as a technique for testing network devices in a laboratory and is not well suited for testing modern services on real networks. One of the disadvantages is the long testing time and incomplete set of metrics.

To meet the new needs of the industry, several years ago the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) developed ITU-T Y.1564 standard, which has a number of important advantages over RFC 2544. For example, the ability to measure the main metrics of Service Level Agreement (SLA) and Quality-of-Service (QoS). At the same time, the total time required for measurements is significantly reduced. A detailed article is devoted to the description of this standard:

Even in the standard configuration, the EXFO MAX-800 series analyzers support both the classic RFC 2544 standard and the modern ITU-T Y.1564 standard (called EtherSAM in the instrument interface).

Main Design Features of the EXFO MAX-800 Series Analyzers

Analyzer Models EXFO MAX-860 and EXFO MAX-860G structurally the same. They contain one RJ45 port for connecting to Ethernet networks over twisted pair and two ports with SFP+ modules for connecting to Ethernet networks over fiber. The wavelength and distance of fiber transmission will depend on the type of SFP+ installed.

The MAX-860 supports 10Mbps to 1Gbps Ethernet testing in hardware and cannot test 10G. On the other hand, the MAX-860G hardware supports Ethernet testing from 10Mbps to 10.3Gbps (LAN/WAN).

The photo below shows all connectors on the MAX-860 and MAX-860G analyzers. In the upper part there are three connectors for connecting to the tested Ethernet network. In the lower part there are interfaces of the device for connecting to a computer via a local network, USB connectors and a slot for installing a micro SD card.

The EXFO MAX-880 analyzer model has four more connectors as it can also test OTN, SDH/PDH, SONET and other transport networks at speeds up to 10.7 Gbps. Connection to any networks via fiber is performed using the same two connectors with SFP + modules. The photo below shows what the connector panel of the EXFO MAX-880 analyzer looks like.
