SHORT DESCRIPTION
New Series of Arbitrary Waveform Generators and Standard Functions Tektronix AFG31000 differs from other series by the maximum set of features and excellent characteristics. The AFG31000 can generate 12 standard waveforms, supports 5 modulations, and has a built-in arbitrary waveform generator with large memory per channel. Each generator comes preinstalled with the powerful ArbBuilder software, which allows you to create arbitrary waveforms right on the instrument screen. Also, the AFG31000 series generators contain the patented InstaView function, which is activated by a separate button on the front panel of the device and shows the real waveform at the generator outputs (in fact, this is a built-in oscilloscope).
Depending on the generator model, the frequency of the generated sinusoidal signal ranges from 25 MHz to 250 MHz. With the SEQ option, it is possible to generate signals according to a predetermined list (up to 256 signals in all combinations, with support for loops and transitions). To simplify the work, on the front panel of the generator there are about 30 shortcut keys to frequently used functions and settings. A large touch screen will further increase the efficiency of your work. You can download a full description of all the characteristics below on this page in the section Documentation.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Series generators Tektronix AFG31000 are the first of their kind devices that combine the capabilities of a classic generator standard features (AFG), generator according to the list of signals (up to 256 pieces in all combinations) and a signal generator freeform (AWG). It is also worth noting separately the presence of the patented InstaView function, which shows the real signal generated by the generator, taking into account distortion due to load impedance mismatch.
The photo below shows a two-channel model Tektronix AFG31252 (right) in the generation mode according to a predefined list of signals, as well as the shape of these signals on the oscilloscope screen Tektronix MSO54 (left). Further on this page, the main features of the AFG31000 generators are described in detail. You can find a full description of their capabilities below on this page in the section Documentation.
Standard Function Generation (AFG Mode)
All AFG31000 series generators can generate 12 types of commonly used standard waveforms: sine, square, pulse, sawtooth, triangular, Sin(x)/x, exponential rise and fall, Gaussian, Lorentzian, Haversine, DC voltage, and noise. 5 types of modulation can be applied to the generated signals: AM, FM, FM, PWM, FSK.
Dual Channel Models can generate different signals on both outputs with independent adjustment of amplitude, frequency and other parameters of each of the signals. This photo shows the screen of the AFG31000 Series Generator when the first output is a pure sine wave with 500 mV peak amplitude (1 Volt peak-to-peak) and 1 MHz, and the second output is a pure sine wave of the same amplitude and frequency, but with amplitude modulation.
Signal list generation (Sequence mode)
This mode is available with the SEQ option. The AFG31000 series generators have the ability to generate long sequences of different signals according to a pre-compiled list. For each channel, the list can contain up to 256 signals in any combination, with support for loops, transitions, pauses, and triggers on a clock pulse.
This feature is very useful in situations where you need to generate complex combinations of test signals that change frequently. Instead of reloading the next combination into the generator memory each time, you can arrange all the necessary signals in the form of a long sequence, load it into the instrument’s memory and then change test combinations on the fly simply by selecting the necessary steps and conditions in the transition table.
This screenshot of the generator screen shows a list of eight sine waveforms, each of which will be repeated three times. As can be seen from the table, for each signal, you can set a pause and transition conditions.
In this screenshot of the oscilloscope series Tektronix MSO5 shows the result of the list generation function from the previous example. On the oscilloscope screen, you can see that two signals were generated, each of which consists of eight sinusoidal signals of different amplitude and frequency. In this case, each individual sinusoidal signal contains three periods (as indicated in the table above). The third signal on the oscilloscope screen (red graph) is a clock generated by the Tektronix AFG31000 generator at the beginning of the specified sequence.
Arbitrary waveform generation (AWG mode)
For the AFG31000 series generators, there are two ways to generate arbitrary waveforms. The first way is to create signals on the computer using the program ArbExpress and transferring the created file to the instrument's memory for generation. The ArbExpress program is described later on this page.
The second way is to use the program ArbBuilder which is already installed on the generator itself. This program allows you to create and edit complex arbitrary waveforms directly on the instrument screen. Since the AFG31000 series generators use a large touch screen, the creation process is further simplified. And if you need to load into the generator a signal created in a third-party program (for example, in MATLAB) or a real signal recorded using an oscilloscope, then this can be easily done by importing .CSV files into ArbBuilder directly from a USB flash drive.
This screenshot shows the screen of the Tektronix AFG31000 series generator during the creation of an arbitrary signal from a set of points using the built-in ArbBuilder program.
ArbExpress program for creating complex waveforms of any shape
ArbExpress is a powerful Windows software that included in standard delivery, designed to create and edit complex signals on a computer and send them to the memory of Tektronix AFG31000 series instruments for generation.
ArbExpress allows you to:
- create any combination of waveforms from standard waveform templates
- waveform maths
- directly import waveforms from Tektronix oscilloscopes
- transfer waveforms to AFG and AWG series instruments directly from the ArbExpress or MATLAB application
Below is an example of applying noise to a meander signal in the ArbExpress program. Calculation results are displayed in the lower Resultant Waveform window. The signal is ready to be loaded into the generator.
