DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Series of optical reflectometers Anritsu MT9085 ACCESS Master is an evolutionary development of the previous series of professional reflectometers MT9083x2. Like its predecessor, the MT9085 series is divided into three main modifications (A, B and C), which differ in purpose, dynamic range and operating wavelengths:
Modification A. Single-mode and multi-mode models MT9085A with a dynamic range of 39 dB, designed for the construction and maintenance of optical networks of small and medium length.
Modification B. Single-mode and multi-mode MT9085B models with a dynamic range of 42 dB are designed for the construction and maintenance of any city-scale networks, as well as PON networks.
Modification C. Single-mode models MT9085C with a dynamic range of 46 dB, are designed for the construction and maintenance of long backbone networks between cities.
The professional MT9085 series is made in a convenient compact body, equipped with a bright color touch screen, operates in a wide temperature range and contains a capacious battery that provides up to 12 hours of battery life.
Russified user interface of reflectometers Anritsu MT9085
In the menu of Anritsu MT9085A, MT9085B and MT9085C reflectometers, you can select the language in which the instrument's user interface will work. The list currently includes 12 different languages, including Russian. Below is a snippet from technical documentation manufacturer (page 14 of the reflectometer description), which indicates Russian language support.
Precise reflectometric measurements
Anritsu scatterometers have always stood out for the accuracy of their measurements. The MT9085 series provides high accuracy over a wide temperature range and is maintained over time, throughout the life of the instruments.
The MT9085 reflectometers have a maximum number of reflectogram points of 150 thousand, a distance measurement resolution of up to 5 cm, and a loss and reflection resolution of 0.001 dB. Loss measurement error does not exceed 0.05 dB/dB. Other measurement errors in different operating modes of reflectometers are described in detail in technical documentation (below on this page).
This screenshot of an Anritsu MT9085 Series OTDR shows a 392 meter optical fiber trace showing two reflective events (connectors) and one bad splice between them. Loss on poor welding is 1.726 dB, and its reflection is -57.062 dB. Losses are measured using the exact four point method.
The MT9085 reflectometers automatically detect all irregularities present in the fiber and record them in the event table. These inhomogeneities are usually caused by: optical connectors, fiber welds, macrobends, and various defects. For each found event, the reflectometer shows: the distance to the event, its loss and reflection, as well as several additional parameters. Events with poor performance, such as high reflection or high loss, are highlighted in red in the table.
Anritsu MT9085 Series Fiber Visualizer Mode
Every Anritsu MT9085 Series OTDR comes standard with an optical link schematic mode called "Fiber Visualizer". This mode is very convenient for beginners, because the reflectometer itself selects the optimal testing parameters and in a matter of seconds builds a block diagram of the events found in the tested fiber (connectors, splitters, splices, etc.).
That is, as a result of the measurement, you get not only a fiber reflectogram, but also a visual graphical representation of the main elements of this fiber. Each event detected in the fiber is checked against the pass/fail criteria, and defective events are highlighted in red. After that, you can generate a comprehensive PDF report that completes the testing process.
The Fiber Visualizer is very helpful for beginners as it makes it easier to understand and interpret measurement results. Below are some screen shots of the MT9085 reflectometer showing how this mode works.
This screenshot shows a block diagram of a good link 392.2 meters long, in which at a distance of 188.6 meters there is a mechanical optical connection (connector) with a loss of 0.284 dB. In the lower right part of the screen there is a trace of the selected event, which shows the level of its reflection (-55.5 dB).
At any time, you can switch from the block diagram mode to the regular trace mode and view the parameters of each event in the form of a graph or table. This screenshot shows the trace and event table of the previous optical link (392.2 meters long) with very detailed information about it.
Anritsu MT9085 Series OTDRs in Fiber Visualizer mode fully support PON networks. Events corresponding to splitters with different division ratios are correctly recognized and displayed. This screenshot shows a branch of the PON network, in which two dividers are installed with division ratios of 1 to 8 and 1 to 4. The position and losses of each divider are measured and presented in the diagram. Please note that the classic trace of this link is also present in the lower right part of the screen, which is convenient for experienced workers.
This screenshot shows the same branch of the PON network, but in the form of a trace and an event table. As you can see, the Anritsu MT9085 ACCESS Master series optical reflectometers provide all the necessary visualization and analysis capabilities of measurement results, which increases the speed and efficiency of work.
Analysis of the purity and quality of optical connectors using a video microscope
The Anritsu MT9085 OTDR series supports connection of a video microscope with a magnification of 400 times (model G0306B). This microscope is connected to one of the USB connectors of the device and does not require additional options for its operation. The G0306B Microscope comes standard with several attachments to test the purity and quality of common types of optical connectors.
The left side of this photo shows the appearance of the G0306B microscope connected to the Anritsu MT9085 reflectometer, and the right side of the microscope itself with a set of interchangeable nozzles and a soft shipping case.
When using the G0306B microscope, the Anritsu MT9085 reflectometer can not only show the surface of the connector and save its image. The list of standard features includes automatic checking of the connector surface for defects and scratches in accordance with international standards. IEC 61300-3-35 (IEC61300-3-35). The analysis is performed according to the standardized "Pass" / "fail" criteria, which is very convenient for quick certification of all network elements, as well as finding and replacing problem connectors.
This screenshot of the MT9085 screen shows the surface of a contaminated optical connector with the results of automatic analysis. The connector was recognized as defective, since 203 contaminations were found in the contact zone of the connectors, with a diameter of 250 microns.
Also the Anritsu G0306B microscope can be used with a conventional computer. To do this, you need to connect it to a free USB port on your computer, download it from the Anritsu website and install the free MX900030A program. The functionality of this computer program is similar to the functionality of the program built into the reflectometer.
Built-in light source, power meter and illuminance (VFL)
Each Anritsu MT9085 Series OTDR comes standard with stable radiation source with the same wavelengths as the reflectometer. If a power meter is installed at the far end of the fiber, this source can be used to accurately measure loss in dB. In addition, the built-in source can modulate the generated radiation at frequencies of 270 Hz, 1 kHz, or 2 kHz. Modulated radiation can be used to identify long fibers for which lumen cannot be used (more than 10 km long). The built-in radiation source uses the same optical port (connector) as the reflectometer itself.
Also included as standard with every Anritsu MT9085 series reflectometer is built-in power meter optical signal with a measurement range of -50 to -5 dBm. This power meter also uses the optical port of the OTDR itself. It supports several popular single mode wavelengths (1310, 1550 nm and others). Read more about its characteristics below on this page in the section Documentation.
In addition to the standard power meter, Anritsu MT9085 series optical reflectometers can be equipped with optional power meter (one of options 004, 005 or 007). This additional meter has its own separate connector and a wider measuring range that depends on the option number.
Option 004 is a built-in optical power meter with a measurement range of -50 to +23 dBm and calibrated wavelengths: 1310, 1383, 1490, 1550, 1625 and 1650 nm.
Option 005 is a built-in optical power meter with a measurement range of -43 to +30 dBm and calibrated wavelengths: 1310, 1383, 1490, 1550, 1625 and 1650 nm.
Option 007 is a built-in optical power meter with a measurement range of -67 to +6 dBm and calibrated wavelengths: 850, 1300, 1310, 1383, 1490, 1550, 1625 and 1650 nm.
This screenshot of the reflectometer shows the control window for the built-in radiation source and the built-in optical power meter.
Additionally, when installing option 002, the MT9085 reflectometer can be equipped with a built-in illumination (visible red light source - VFL). Clearance is very convenient for the primary diagnosis of various damage to the optical cable.
This photo shows the top side of the MT9085 Series OTDR where all of the instrument's connectors are located. Connector #1 is an optional optical power meter (one of options 004, 005 or 007). Connector No. 2 is a source of visible red radiation, translucent (option 002). Zone #3 is the port of an optical reflectometer, combined with a built-in radiation source and a standard power meter. Zone 4 is USB connectors.
Depending on the modification of the device, the reflectometer port (zone No. 3) contains one or two connectors. In the MT9085 series, nine models have one connector and three models have two connectors. Dual connector OTDRs are two singlemode + multimode models and one model with separate 1650nm wavelength for measurements on active fiber.
