SHORT DESCRIPTION

Compact, low cost optical spectrum analyzer EXFO FTB-5235 designed for commissioning and maintenance of networks built on the basis of CWDM or DWDM with speeds up to 10G per channel and channel spacing from 33 GHz. It is based on the measuring platform EXFO FTB-1, which provides excellent ergonomics and ease of use. For more complex networks, 40G and higher channel rates, ultra-dense 25 GHz and 12.5 GHz channels, as well as networks containing ROADM, it is recommended to use level analyzers FTBx-5245 or FTBx-5255.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The EXFO FTB-5235 is a compact, entry-level optical spectrum analyzer that is ideal for a variety of applications, including running and maintaining DWDM and CWDM networks. The FTB-5235 provides accurate optical power versus wavelength measurements, WDM measurement mode, and time drift tracking mode. It can also measure signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) in accordance with IEC 61280-2-9 using the classic interpolation method. This OSNR measurement method is correct for all networks up to and including 10G that do not contain ROADM.

This figure shows EXFO's range of optical spectrum analyzers and their breakdown by feature and cost. As you can see, the FTB-5235 model is intermediate between a simple CWDM channel power meter and older models capable of measuring network parameters. 100G and more speed.

Measurement of CWDM and DWDM parameters

The EXFO FTB-5235 Optical Spectrum Analyzer is an ISP's best friend. It allows you to quickly and accurately measure the power and center frequency of each CWDM or DWDM channel, as well as mixed CWDM / DWDM networks. Also for each channel, the signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) is measured, which is an important quality characteristic of any WDM system.

This screenshot shows the appearance of the spectrum of four channels of a network using CWDM. Below the spectrum graph is a table with detailed data for each channel: channel number, its center wavelength, channel power in dBm, signal to noise ratio (OSNR), noise level in each channel and channel width by level -3 dB. For a specialist, this information makes it possible to quickly assess the state of the network and detect problematic elements in advance.

Below the spectrum graph is a table with detailed data for each channel: channel number, its power in dBm, channel center wavelength, signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and channel width by level -3 dB.

Quality assurance of SFP, SFP+, XFP, CFP and QSFP28

The number of launched 40G and 100G networks is growing every day, and in these high-speed networks, instead of the usual SFP, SFP + and XFP, new optical-electrical converters CFP and QSFP28 are used, which transmit a signal simultaneously at several wavelengths. In addition, CFP and QSFP28 tend to have longer transmission ranges (up to 10 km for LR4), so the overall loss budget requirements are quite stringent. And the manufacturing quality of CFP and QSFP28 strongly depends on the manufacturer and even the batch of production, and oddly enough, a large percentage of CFP and QSFP28 going on sale are defective or with a significant deviation from the standard characteristics.

Considering this quality situation of CFP and QSFP28, verification of their optical performance is essential to speed up and simplify the commissioning of 40G and 100G networks, as well as reduce the failure rate and reduce the cost of maintenance. The EXFO FTB-5235 Optical Spectrum Analyzer is ideal for testing all types of SFP, SFP+, XFP, CFP and QSFP28. As an example, this figure shows the internals of a CFP4 converter with an LC connector that uses four wavelengths to transmit 100G over single mode fiber. For a detailed article on testing 40G, 100G and 400G networks, see here.
