SHORT DESCRIPTION

For cable operators, Remote PHY technology is becoming more and more preferred. And this means moving fiber closer and closer to the end user. Remote PHY technology involves the transition from analog fiber transmission to digital signal transmission and the use of DWDM optical channel multiplexing technology to significantly increase throughput.

Analyzer EXFO FOT-5205 specifically designed to run and maintain DWDM-based networks. The spectral range of this device, the range of the measured power of DWDM channels and the channel grid fully comply with the Remote PHY specifications (ITU channels from 14.5 to 62). You can download a full description of all the characteristics of the EXFO FOT-5205 analyzer on this page in the section Documentation.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

EXFO FOT-5205 is a compact DWDM (Channel Checker) optical channel analyzer that allows you to very quickly measure the power of all channels with numbers from 14.5 to 62 on the ITU grid. This channel number range corresponds to the wavelength range from 1527.99 nm to 1565.90 nm. The device has two separate optical inputs: one for measuring a strong signal (up to +10 dBm per channel), and the second for measuring a weak signal (up to -10 dBm per channel). The second input allows accurate measurements of the signal available through the monitoring port of the network equipment. These features make the FOT-5205 an indispensable tool for cable operators, especially those using Remote PHY technology.

This figure shows EXFO's range of optical spectrum analyzers and their breakdown by feature and cost. As you can see, the FOT-5205 model is not a full-fledged optical spectrum analyzer and belongs to the basic solutions of optical channel analyzers. For a deep study of optical signals, see the models: FTB-5235, FTBx-5245/5255.

Table and graphics modes

The EXFO FOT-5205 optical channel analyzer has two modes for displaying measurement results. In the first mode, the channel numbers on the ITU grid and the corresponding optical powers are shown in the form of a table of numerical values. In the second mode, the measured powers of each channel are displayed in the form of a graphic column opposite the number of the corresponding channel. Fast switching between both display modes is provided.

If the FOT-5205 analyzer enables automatic power check of DWDM channels in accordance with the "Pass / Fail" criteria, then bad channels will be highlighted in a different color. Both measurement display modes are shown in this figure.

Access networks based on DOCSIS 3.1

The new DOCSIS 3.1 access network specification provides for the rejection of analog signal transmission over fiber optics and the transition to digital transmission in the fiber optic section using DWDM wavelength division multiplexing. It also provides for a significant reduction in the number of amplifiers in the coaxial part of the network: DOCSIS 3.0 uses up to five amplifiers, and DOCSIS 3.1 has a maximum of one. Such changes improve noise immunity and transmission range, and the use of DWDM multiplexing technology significantly increases the overall network throughput.

To illustrate the above, this figure shows the configuration of access networks based on DOCSIS 3.0 and older versions, as well as the configuration of access networks according to the new DOCSIS 3.1 specification.

And this figure shows the main parameters of various DOCSIS configurations, from version 1.0, which appeared in 1997, to the latest DOCSIS 3.1 and FULL DUPLEX DOCSIS 3.1, providing transfer rates up to 10 Gb / s.
