General information
Optical reflectometers (English name: OTDR) allow automatic measurements of the main parameters of fiber optic communication lines: determination of the length of the optical line and distances to points of inhomogeneities of the optical fiber (welding, switching points, etc.), calculation of attenuation in the line, the amount of return loss and the amount of the reflected signal, visual determination of FOCL damage and much more.

Notes:
1 Dynamic Range – the best value is indicated, which the reflectometer can provide at the maximum duration of the probing pulses. The more dynamic range, the better. For more information about probing pulses, see here.
2 Event Dead Zone (EDZ) – the best value is indicated, which the reflectometer can provide with the minimum duration of the probing pulses. The dead zone determines the ability of the reflectometer to distinguish closely spaced events. The smaller the dead zone, the better.
3 Operating range on a real line - the guaranteed length of the fiber optic line is indicated, which can be measured at the maximum duration of the probing pulses. At the same time, a margin of dynamic range is provided so that the end of the trace is 5 dB above the noise level. Please note that for PON networks, the range is much shorter and depends not only on the dynamic range of the reflectometer, but also on other parameters.
