MAIN CHARACTERISTICS

The Rohde & Schwarz FSH3 is the ideal instrument for fast, high-precision signal exploration at minimal cost. It has a large number of measurement functions and thus can be used in everything from installing and maintaining a cellular base station to finding faults in RF cables.

Due to its outstanding performance, the R&S FSH 3 is used aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to monitor antenna cables (distance to fault measurement).

The R&S FSH is available with an upper frequency of 3 GHz (R&S FSH3) or 6 GHz (R&S FSH3). R&S FSH6) – and the presence or absence of an internal tracking generator. Instruments equipped with a tracking generator can measure the distance to a cable fault, perform scalar and vector network analysis, and make single-port cable loss measurements. Most models have an adjustable preamp, which makes it possible to measure very weak signals. Two types of power sensors are available as accessories. One is for high-precision matched-line power measurements up to 8 GHz or up to 18 GHz, and the other is for directional power measurements up to 4 GHz. The tables below show the configuration required for each application and a summary of the supplied models.

TDMA Power Measurement

With the TDMA POWER function, the R&S FSH3 performs time domain power measurements within a time slot in time division multiple access (TDMA). All settings required for GSM and EDGE standards are defined in the R&S FSH3 to make measurements easier for the user.

Field strength measurements

The R&S FSH3 takes into account the gains of the connected antennas when making electric field strength measurements. The field strength is displayed directly in dBµV/m. In addition, it is possible to correct frequency-dependent loss or gain, for example, for a cable or an amplifier. For fast and easy analysis results, the R&S FSH3 offers two user-defined limit lines together with automatic limit monitoring.

Channel power measurements

The R&S FSH3 determines the power of the selected transmission channel using the corresponding function. Channel power measurements for 3GPP, WCDMA, cdmaOne and cdma2000 1x digital radio standards are performed with just one keystroke, if the instrument is set to the correct settings.

Receiver mode

The R&S FSH-K3 option allows the R&S FSH3 to be used as a monitoring or EMC prequalification receiver. Measurements are taken at a specific frequency with a user-selectable measurement time. In scan mode, the R&S FSH3 measures the level successively at various frequencies set in the channel table. The channel table is created using the R&S FSH View software and then loaded into the R&S FSH3. For some mobile communication standards and TV standards, there are already ready-made tables. In addition, the instrument has 200 Hz, 9 kHz, 120 kHz, and 1 MHz band pass filters for CISPR radiated RFI measurements. Peak, average, RMS and quasi-peak detectors are also available to the user.

Directional power meter

The R&S FSH-Z44 directional power sensor turns the R&S FSH3 into a full-featured power meter in the frequency range from 200 kHz to 4 GHz. With this add-on, it is possible to simultaneously measure the output power and the matching of a transmit antenna system under field conditions. A directional power sensor measures values up to 120 watts and typically does not require additional attenuators. It is compatible with common GSM/EDGE, 3GPP WCDMA, cdmaOne, cdma2000 1x, DVB-T and DAB standards.

Cable measurement

Quickly and accurately determine the distance to any fault in an RF cable. Measuring the distance to the fault point with the R&S FSH-Z2 measuring bridge gives you an instant overview of the status of the device under test (return loss and distance, see figure). This is only possible with an R&S FSH3 with tracking generator and with the R&S FSH-B1 (distance to fault measurement) and R&S FSH-Z2 (measuring bridge and power divider) options installed.

Scalar measurements of direct and reflected signals with a measuring bridge (R&S FSH-Z2 as an option)

The R&S FSH3 with built-in tracking generator allows you to quickly and cost-effectively determine the transfer characteristics of cables, filters, amplifiers, etc. By installing the R&S FSH-Z2 measuring bridge, you can, for example, determine the matching (return loss or VSWR) of an antenna. The bridge is screwed directly onto the RF input and output of the R&S FSH3 tracking generator without additional cables.

Vector measurements of direct and reflected signals

Compared to scalar measurements, the R&S FSH-K2 vector measurement add-on significantly increases the accuracy and dynamic range of transmission and reflection measurements. All this becomes possible because both the amplitude and the phase of the received signal are analyzed. When operating as part of a system, the R&S FSH 3 can be calibrated to comprehensively correct system errors. Displaying the amplitude and phase of the signal on a Smith chart allows you to analyze in detail the matching of various components, such as antennas. Also, the user can set the parameters of the limit lines, which simplifies the evaluation of the measurement results.

R&S FSH View control software for the R&S FSH3 spectrum analyzer

A software package for documenting your measurements is supplied with every R&S FSH3:
- Runs under Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP operating systems;
- Fast and convenient data transfer from R&S FSH3 to PC and vice versa;
- Converting data to ASCII or MS Excel format;
- Printing out all existing information using Windows (printing an image from the R&S FSH3 screen for documentation);
- Graphic data is stored in standard formats (.bmp, .pcx, .png, .wmf);
- Permanent and continuous transfer of sweeps to a personal computer; the possibility of further analysis (markers, scaling, etc.);
- Saving sweeps and other information about measurements; comparison of old and new measurements (the amount of memory is limited only by the size of the hard drive of the control computer);
- Automatic saving of measurement results in selected intervals;
- Obtaining data about the cable using the built-in editor; data upload to R&S FSH3 for distance-to-fault measurements (R&S FSH-B1);
- Editor for generating limit lines, conversion factors and correction factors for external attenuators and amplifiers;
- Macro Word function, for quick and easy documentation of measurement results;
- Connection of the instrument to a PC via an interference-free RS-232-C interface with optical isolation.

Convenient, reliable and mobile

The R&S FSH3 spectrum analyzer is a robust instrument that can be used in the field.

The R&S FSH3 can also be used in the laboratory. The device has an adjustable, folding stand, which allows you to place it at an angle that is optimal for viewing.

The R&S FSH3, including accessories, can be stored in a compact and robust aluminum case for easy transport.
