To simplify the choice, a brief description of the features of each series in which there are such models is given, this will help you understand how some series differ from others, and which oscilloscope model is better to buy.

1 Number of channels - the number of analog channels is indicated. If the oscilloscope is also equipped with digital channels as standard, then their number is indicated after the "+" sign. If digital channels are available as an option, this is marked as (opt.).


2 Record length - the standard recording depth per channel is indicated, in many series the memory size can be increased using additional options.


3 Oscillograms per second - indicates the speed of continuous capture and analysis of waveforms, which can actually be provided by a specific model. Several tens of waveforms per second are enough to view stationary signals. To detect infrequent interference or fast signal changes, choose a model capable of delivering at least 5,000 waveforms per second. Read the article for details: description of DPO technology.


4 Spectrum analyzer - four types of spectrum analyzers are used in oscilloscopes: software-based FFT (FFT), software-hardware based on SpectrumView, software-based SignalVu and a full-fledged hardware radio spectrum analyzer. The software analyzer based on the FFT (FFT) has two main drawbacks: it works only with large amplitude signals (10 mV or more) and when using it, as a rule, it is not possible to simultaneously see the signal itself and its spectrum. The SpectrumView-based firmware analyzer has a separate digital spectrum processor in each oscilloscope channel and provides ease of use and capabilities far beyond the FFT. The SignalVu-based software analyzer has very broad RF analysis capabilities, including vector demodulation, but like the FFT and SpectrumView only works with large amplitude signals. A fully hardware analyzer allows you to fully measure the spectral characteristics of even weak radio signals with an amplitude of less than 1 μV (less than -107 dBm).

 

Of all the series that have oscilloscopes with bandwidths from 1 GHz to 2.5 GHz, the best is the series Tektronix MSO6, which provides a sampling rate of 25 GS/s per analog channel. All other series can provide a maximum of 6.25 GS/s per channel. These are the series: MSO5, MSO4, MDO4000C and MDO3. Consider the main features of each of these series.

In series Tektronix MSO5 a total of 12 oscilloscopes, three of which are with a bandwidth of 1 GHz and three more with a bandwidth of 2 GHz. Depending on the model, these oscilloscopes can contain from 4 to 8 analog channels, each with support for FlexChannel (up to 64 digital channels). Digitization of signals on all channels is carried out using accurate 12-bit ADCs at a rate of 3.125 GS/s. By reducing the ADC capacity to 8 bits, a twofold increase in the digitization rate to 6.25 GS/s is provided.

Efficient design of multi-channel analog and digital systems

 

A simpler series, in which there are models with a band of 1 GHz and 1.5 GHz, is Tektronix MSO4. Same as older series MSO5, the MSO4 series digital oscilloscopes feature a large Full HD touchscreen, but with a smaller diagonal (33cm) and a similar user interface. They contain 4 or 6 analog channels with technology FlexChannel (up to 48 digital channels). Signals are digitized using accurate 12-bit ADCs, and rare signal anomalies are searched using DPO technologies (more than 500,000 waveforms per second).

Another series that has one 1 GHz bandwidth oscilloscope is Tektronix MDO4000C. The devices of this series are unique in that they contain built-in spectrum analyzer up to 6 GHz. At the same time, the signals from the analog and digital channels of these oscilloscopes and the signal from its RF input are precisely time-coupled, which makes it possible to correlate events in the frequency domain with their causes in the time domain and vice versa.
