Tektronix MSO2 series of portable oscilloscopes

Brief description of the series

The Tektronix MSO2 series oscilloscopes feature 2 or 4 analog channels, up to 500 MHz bandwidth, 2.5 GS/s sample rate, a 16-channel logic analyzer (option 2-MSO), an arbitrary function generator and 4-bit digital pattern generator (option 2-SOURCE), and a serial protocol analyzer (option 2-SERIAL) all in a compact, battery-powered, 40 mm (1.5 in) thin package. The MSO2 is a great oscilloscope for debugging and testing anywhere you work.

The Tektronix MSO2 series features a touchscreen and innovative user interface that is identical to Tektronix's high-end oscilloscope series. During operation, the MSO2 series oscilloscopes can be upgraded, including bandwidth expansion, by activating software options. For detailed differences between the models in the series, see the interactive table. A full description of all characteristics can be downloaded below on this page in the Documentation section.

Professional digital oscilloscope

The Tektronix MSO2 series oscilloscopes can perform 37 automated measurements, fast Fourier transform (FFT), calculate statistics and perform additional mathematical signal processing, including free equation editing. The innovative user interface and touch screen greatly assist in interacting with the oscilloscope.

The MSO2 series display provides a large viewing area not only for waveforms, but also for graphs, measurement result tables, bus decoding tables, and more. You can easily change the size and position of various graphs and tables on the screen, and arrange them as you like.

The MSO2 series oscilloscopes provide an extensive set of trigger conditions that can be used to capture complex, infrequent events. Triggers include: pulse width, rise/fall time, setup and hold, timeout, runt, serial or parallel bus data, as well as logical combinations.

The oscillogram recorded in memory can contain up to 10 million samples per channel, and to find the events of interest in it, the automatic search and marking function is used, which allows you to quickly find all the necessary fragments of the signal and easily move from one event to another.

Among the advanced features, it is worth noting the measurement of the frequency response of the system (Bode plot). In this case, the gain and phase of the output voltage of the device under test are measured relative to the input test voltage. To measure the Bode plot, the signal generator built into the oscilloscope (option 2-SOURCE) or a compatible external generator is used.

Logic analyzer

The Tektronix MSO2 oscilloscope's 2-MSO option adds a 16-channel digital logic analyzer that is fully integrated into the oscilloscope's user interface. This simplifies operation and makes it easier to solve problems when analyzing signals in various areas. The logic analyzer is connected to digital buses using the P6316 16-channel digital probe, which is included in the 2-MSO option. An example of the logic analyzer in operation is shown in this screenshot.

Serial protocol analyzer

Serial bus signals typically contain address, control information, data, and clock frequency, making it difficult for an engineer to interpret the image on the oscilloscope screen and manually isolate events of interest. On the other hand, automatic triggering, decoding, and searching for events and conditions in signals transmitted over a serial bus allow for full automation of routine work and create a robust set of serial bus debugging tools.

The Tektronix MSO2 oscilloscope's 2-SERIAL option adds an I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, CAN FD, CAN XL, SENT, and LIN serial protocol analyzer that is fully integrated into the oscilloscope's user interface. An example of the serial protocol analyzer in action is shown in this screenshot.

Case design

Structurally, all models of the Tektronix MSO2 series are made in a portable case measuring 344 × 210 × 40 mm and weighing 1.8 kg. With the 2-BATPK option, the oscilloscope is equipped with a removable compartment for two batteries, which provide up to 8 hours of autonomous operation. At the same time, the depth of the oscilloscope increases to 78 mm, and the weight to 3.2 kg (with one battery) or up to 3.6 kg (with two batteries).

Tektronix MSO2 oscilloscopes come with a removable kickstand with a handle for easy carrying or installing the device on a lab bench. The appearance of the oscilloscope on the kickstand is shown in this photo.
