The principle of operation of an optical reflectometer (OTDR)

FTTH technology is a cost-effective solution due to the use of PON passive optical networks. What makes FTTH even more interesting is the easy testing, measurement and monitoring. These systems follow the same basic principles as conventional fiber optic networks, thus allowing the same equipment to be used for construction and maintenance.

Recommended instruments for FTTx and PON testing (FTTH, FTTB, FTTC, BPON, GPON, EPON)

Work in progress FTTx and PON networks, it is necessary to perform three main measurements:
1. Measurement of the reflectogram of each section of the optical line, including splitters (we recommend EXFO FTB-1 with FTB-730 module). See a detailed comparison here: choice of reflectometer for PON;
2. Bi-directional optical loss measurement between two endpoints (we recommend EXFO FOT-300, EXFO FOT-600 or EXFO FOT-930 MaxTester);
3. Bi-directional optical return loss (ORL) measurement (we recommend EXFO FOT-930 MaxTester).

In the process of commissioning FTTx and PON networks, three main measurements must be performed:
1. Checking the condition of optical connectors using a video microscope (we recommend EXFO FIP-400);
2. Measurement of optical power at the OLT output (we recommend EXFO PPM-350C);
3. Measurement of the optical power of the forward and reverse flows of the PON branch when adding each new ONT (we recommend EXFO PPM-350C).
